John Winder

Next up in our "60 Seconds with..." series for 2017 is Fixture Secretary, Sunday 1st XI Captain and general good egg; John Winder

John, what were your highlights of 2016?
For the Sunday 1st XI the undoubted highlight of the season was the inaugural Jeff Woods Memorial Trophy game which saw so many spectators enjoy a keenly fought encounter in warm August sunshine.

Who do you think will be looking back on 2016 and say "that was a good year"?
Lots of people at UCC no doubt judging by the success of the sides at all levels. I think I should really concentrate on those people who I have most to do with on and off the field. Some players in the Sunday 1st XI have had outstanding seasons. Hats off to Ravi Dhote, Sean Lynch and Vijay among the seniors. Among the juniors, Ally Hughes, Zac Hemsworth, Sol Turner, Phil McGowan and Luca di Stefano performed particularly well, showing no fear when facing experienced players of decent ability.

Who are you expecting big things of in 2017?
Zac Hemsworth and Phil McGowan among the juniors. Phil Wood among the seniors if he is in a position to play a bit more regularly.

What are your hopes for 2017 both on and off the field?
I hope we fulfill our fixtures and provide plenty of entertainment for our band of loyal followers on Sunday afternoons. I also hope the Saturday sides are pushing towards the top of their respective divisions while maintaining the friendly spirit for which Upton is renowned. Off the field I hope we can maintain everything that is good about UCC and that it remains a busy, welcoming and thriving establishment. If we maintain everything which is good and continue to make improvements to the ground and the clubhouse thanks to our wonderful volunteers I don't think anyone could ask for more

What's your top tip for 2017?
While some of the Saturday sides will doubtless be involved in battles for promotion and championships, I think it is fair to say that the Sunday 1st XI will not. Like Sam Allardyce and Tony Pulis I intend to maintain a proud record of never having been relegated. On a personal level, I hope to make double figures for the third season in succession, having made one score of 10 in 2015 and reaching the giddy heights of 13 in one match last season.
