First EVER girls cricket match...

It was with great pleasure that the coaching team assembled the very first U15 girls team at Upton for 8am last Saturday morning (20th May). Despite the disgustingly early start a convoy set out to a temporarily sunny Appleton.

The eight tasked with creating history were:

  • Lily Scudder
  • Charlie Scudder
  • Hannah McGowan
  • Sophie Morris
  • Maddie Arthur
  • Megan Andrews
  • Ellen McGowan
  • Jess Penney

The day started well! Lily won the toss and elected to field first. These games are all 16 overs a-side with 8 players a-side which makes for some funky and interesting fields and totals set. The task of creating Upton history fell to Charlie Scudder who opened the bowling with her usual accuracy. Together with Maddie we got off to a great start, containing the Appleton girls early on. The tight start from the girls was ultimately responsible for the fall of the very first wicket, a direct hit run out from the boundary by Lily. Despite a great retirement on 25 from the Appleton opener, Upton were able to contain Appleton to 53 for 3 from their 16 overs. Ellen and Maddie were able to pick up a wicket a piece and some further tight spells from Lily, Hannah and Sophie contributed to containment.

This fantastic start to girls cricket was soon continued as the batsmen made a defiant and stubborn start. Jess and Megan made a very solid start putting on 24 for the first wicket before Megan unfortunately fell for 5. It was at this point that the rains put an end to proceedings, with Upton in a brilliant position to open their account in the Cheshire U15 Girls division.

A brilliant performance all round and thank you to all the parents who got up at the ungodly hour to take all the girls up to Warrington.

A rearrangement of this game and 5 other games are to follow.
