Charlie Ward & John Winder honoured as Vice-Presidents

The Governing Committee have honoured two members with Vice-President for their outstanding contribution to Upton Cricket Club over a number of years.

Charlie Ward
Charlie did sterling service first as 5th XI skipper, a side which was responsible for introducing many junior players to senior cricket. Charlie then went on to run the junior section for a number of years. Since giving that role up Charlie has remained an active Club member, running the popular Friday night BBQs, which not only raises a good sum of money each year but is undoubtedly instrumental in the junior section attracting such large numbers. In 2010 he successfully re-introduced the Club’s 6-a-side competition, which he runs brilliantly. Finally he is always keen to attempt new things, his treasure hunt from a few years ago is still talked about, and this year he introduced a family fun day which even though hampered by the weather was a success, and which he is looking to build on in future years.

John Winder
John has run the Sunday 1st XI for a number of years in three stints, stepping into the role for a second time following the untimely death of Jeff Woods. John is responsible of giving many of the current crop of young players the first taste of senior cricket, and he does so ensuring their development is seen as more important than the result of any game. It is recognised that John’s handling of the kids first games at senior level is really appreciated by both the children and their parents. In addition John is also the Fixture Secretary - a role he has now done for a number of years, his communication and his liaising with the Grounds Chairman and groundsman means that the large number of games played each year at Upton pass off without a hitch. Finally when volunteers were asked to help out this year at Junior nets on a Friday, John came forward and in his own words "offered his limited cricket ability in any way that we could use it" attending every Friday and overseen the older age group in the nets and for field practise.

I'm sure you'll join with us in congratulation, and thanking both of these gentlemen for their continued service to this fine club of ours.
