A look back at senior cricket records where father and son both appear in the top 75

Upton prides itself on being a family club and there are numerous instances of families having connections with the club over several generations. In this article, we highlight some of the father, son combinations:

Colin Byrom played 664 times for Upton (7th on the all time appearance list) and lies 13th on the all time runs list with 9,302. He also lies 22nd in catches with 165. By comparison, son Gavin has played 384 games so far and has moved from 38th to 34th this season. Gavin started as a bowler and took 251 wickets to lie 41st. More recently, Gavin has proved himself a more than capable top order bat and has 215 runs this season from 9 innings to take his total club runs to 4,946 (39th). He also lies 34th on the catches list with 131.

Gary Dixon is one of the leading players in the club's history. He played 642 games (12th) scoring 13,998 runs (3rd), taking 971 wickets (7th) and 187 catches (14th). Both of Gary's sons have represented Cheshire, however, have played most of their club cricket away from the UCG. Even so, Lee has still recorded 220 games (73rd) whilst Ross has returned to Upton this season. Lee has scored 3,084 runs (61st), taken 284 wickets (37th) and 69 catches (58th). Ross is the club's leading wicket taker this season with 38 wickets taking him past 200 and moving him from 52nd to 47th. He now has 205 club wickets.

John Stowell-Smith played 548 games (17th) taking 495 wickets (23rd) and 195 catches (11th) in addition to useful runs down the order on many occasions. Son Chris has played 332 games (46th) scoring 6,483 runs (25th) and taking 118 catches (36th).

Charlie Ward Senior played 391 games (32nd), many of those as 5th team captain, and scored 2,043 runs (74th). He has also taken 107 catches (40th). Charlie junior has played 274 games (moving from 64th to 59th this season) and has scored 1,962 runs to date (75th). In addition, he has taken 250 wickets (42nd) and 85 catches (50th).

Selection Chairman, Paul Owen has 262 wickets to his name putting him 39th on the all-time list. Sons Matt & Dan are both currently first team regulars. Matt has played 211 games (75th=), scoring 4,974 runs (37th) and taking 60 catches (equal 61st with Mike Chapman and brother Dan). Dan has also scored 2,733 runs (67th).

Catches is the only list that Mike Chapman appears on, whereas father Rob is another club stalwart featuring towards the top of several lists. Rob has played 508 games (20th), scoring 11,513 runs (8th) and taking 183 catches (17th) & 47 stumpings (12th). It will come as a huge surprise (albeit only to Rob) that he does not appear on the wickets list!

Last but certainly not least, it would be remiss not to include a family that has been a part of UCC history for many years. NJ Halsall ("Old Norman") was 1st XI Captain from 1946 - 1948 and again in 1952 as well as serving as Club President from 1981 - 1988. On the field, Norman scored 7,243 runs (19th) and took 490 wickets (24th). His son, NR Halsall ("Young Norman") scored 3,663 runs (52nd) and took 280 wickets (38th).
