Your preview of the weekend ahead...

As we hurtle like a Meteor towards the last few weeks of the season we raise our vodka/martinis, shaken but not stirred, to Sean Connery 87 and we hope that we will have Just Cause to celebrate come close of play.

After last weeks damp squib the firsts host Davenham, who sit fourth in the League, at the UCG. With the corresponding game rained off earlier in the season Davenham have in batsmen Hunt and Gallicham and bowlers Taylor and Bliss players who could give them A Night to Remember . Hopefully with Luca making his first team league debut we will leave Davenham feeling like it is The Longest Day.

The second team venture into Cheshire Wives country with a visit to Alderley Edge looking to gain maximum points by reversing the result in the corresponding fixture in their battle to avoid the drop. After all Diamonds are Forever so we hope they will produce a sparkling performance as i am sure they will all be Playing by Heart

The third team have been playing like The Untouchables recently until they slipped up last week. However tomorrow they have the opportunity to make it a Bridge Too Far for their rivals when they face a handy Barrow side on the back at Upton. In a thrilling rain affected game earlier in the season Upton squeezed home in a low scoring game by 37 runs.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, or the fourth team as they are usually known, head off to Burton. Earlier in the season the fourths records a stunning victory chasing down 225 thanks to a ton from Simon. Even with their Never say Never Again Attitude it will be A Fine Madness if we can replicate that performance and indeed be even more audacious than The First Great Train Robbery .

On Sunday the UCG will host a major fixture as the 1st XI and the Jeff Woods XI battle it out for the Jeff Woods Memorial Trophy. We are very fortunate to be able to call upon two Cheshire County League umpires in Dion Kelly and Barrie Burns who rumour has it both have a Goldfinger to give people out with. Paul Radcliffe has kindly agreed to take charge of the barbecue and 1st XI scorer Harry Sherriff will be keeping everything up to date in the splendidly appointed scorers' hut. James Woods and his side were triumphant in the corresponding fixture last season and the Sunday 1st XI will be doing everything in their power to redress the balance. The finishing touches are being made to both sides as we write but many well-known players past and present have already confirmed their availability for this prestigious fixture. Whatever the outcome, we are all hoping to be blessed by sunshine and to enjoy another tremendous day of cricket. Whether we will see an absolute run fest to match 2016 remains to be seen.
Whatever you do have fun both playing and watching the cricket this week as shortly The Hunt for Red October (sorry only way to get it in) will be over as the weather turns and comes From Russia With Love
