1st XI Captain; Andy Roberts looks ahead to the new season

With season 2015 on the horizon, it is time to start thinking playing cricket again. The winter has been a productive one for the club with the completion of an excellent new facility in the tea room, an excellent new website which will improve our ability to publicise our cricket club.

So, what about out on the paddock? Just as last season I am positive as to what this season might offer. We now have to prove we are a side capable of winning the league and continue to show drive and determination to win games of cricket. Some people’s expectations exceed others, so let me set out mine for this season. As a minimum, I expect us to challenge for the league title and to achieve a couple of decent cup runs. This with a squad and group of people that get on and enjoy each other's company on and off the field.

Last season took a while to get going for us whilst we re adjusted to the demands of the County League. Whilst playing some good cricket in patches, we were unable to achieve a win against the top 3 despite having chances to in some of the games so on reflection, our final position of 6th is probably what we deserved.

With pre season commencing and the nights starting to get lighter, now is the time to get the body ready for the challenge of league and cup cricket for 2015. With teams in the league improving, it's imperative we are as fit as possible to maximise our chances of success this year and improve as a team.

My goals as club captain for the season are below:

  1. To amass enough points to challenge for the league.
  2. To continue to promote more young talent from within our own ranks.
  3. To play positive cricket.
  4. To become the best fielding unit in the league.
  5. To improve our performance season by season.
  6. To be successful whilst respecting the game and traditions of cricket.

A change this year will be the integration of the u15 and u17 junior sides into senior training. For those of you I don't know, I along with the team look forward to getting to know you and helping you enjoy and improve your cricket. With most of the first team having come through junior ranks at the club, it will be great to see more young players making the leap into regular senior cricket on a Saturday.

Here's to an exciting and rewarding 2015 season.

Andy Roberts
1st XI Captain
