3 wins out of 4 for UCC

Just like the 1980 Queen classic, "Another one bites the dust", the 1st XI avoided a potential local derby banana skin when they secured a 7 wicket victory over bottom of the table Irby and recorded another victory as they ticked off the games left this season. Batting first, the Irby openers; Smith and Shillinglaw showed their class as they scored runs at ease before Ben Cant struck with a couple of timely wickets, interspersed with a victim for the veteran of 497 1st XI appearances; Gary Dixon. Having limited himself to just the 10 miles in his morning run, it was Dixon who continued to peg back the Irby batsmen as he went on to claim a further 5 victims to finish with figures of 6 for 22. The Irby innings closed on 108 leaving Upton 56 overs to get the runs. Openers Williams and Cowderoy were in confident mood as they caressed the ball around the lush Irby outfield before the latter fell with 75 on the board. Chris Stowell-Smith was quick to follow, and having a beautiful half century under his belt, Williams fell quickly as well. It was left to hard-hitters Cant and Ingram to see the men in green and gold home and make the short trip to Old Greasby Road with 25 points in the boot of Robbo's car.

At the UCG, Matt Owen's 2nd XI experience their first home defeat in nearly 50 matches at the hands of 3rd placed Tattenhall. Batting first, Upton posted 152 for 7 on a difficult batting track with Simon Evans (51) and Adrian Gughes (40*) the chief architects. Tattenhall were made to fight hard for their victory, and they only reached their target with four balls to spare. Tom Maguire was once again in the wickets grabbing 4 and Graeme Keenan 3. Mike McGreary was exceptional in the field with a brilliant catch and run out.

On the back pitch, Charlie Ward's 3rd XI played avery one sided affair when they bowled Oxton out for just 64 with Vijay grabbing 5 and the timeless Pete Clark 4 wickets. The runs were knocked off with ease with the skipper leading from the front with a cultured 32.

Making the long trip to Haslington, John Scragg rallied his troops and they bowled their hosts out for 171 with Tom Woods grabbing 4wickets and Zeeshan Baig 3 wickets. In reply, the visitors reached the target for the loss of 5 wickets with Tom Woods turning in a match winning 100, ably assisted by Akhtar Ali (41).

So, 3 wins out of 4 and the men in green & gold go marching on.
