Unbeaten weekend for UCC

The Swedes aren't famed for their cricketing heritage, but the words from the 1980 Abba track "The Winner Takes It All" could have been written about the 1st XI's encounter with Bredbury St. Marks as both sides knew they needed to win to ensure their respective dreams continued for another week. In Upton's case it was the dream of promotion, in Bredbury's case it was the dream of avoiding relegation.

Bredbury batted first and Liam Sundve removed their two main run scorers; Darren Carr (598 runs in 2015) and Rick Keyworth (518 runs in 2015), and with Matt Ingram grabbing three wickets in a devastating second spell from the Old Greasby Road end, the innings closed on 154 for 9. Chasing what should have been a comfortable total, an early collapse which saw just six runs scored between four of the top order batsmen put the large crowd into a nervous state. However Mr Reliable; Jay Williams (59) and the ever dependable Darren Warburton (28) steadied those nerves before they both fell which brought Captain Marvel to the crease to knock a crucial 22 runs. However, the crowd were back on the edge of their seats as more wickets fell leaving No.10 Rich Battersby and No.11 Liam Sundve looking desperately for the winning runs. There were jubilant cheers as Liam guided one beautifully through the slips for four and ensured the 1st XI go into the final two weeks of the season still with a mathematical chance of promotion.

The top of the 1st XI Division 2 table currently stands as follows:

At Townfield Lane, Matt Owen's 2nd XI enjoyed a wonderful afternoon having bowled Oxton out for a below par 71, with Gary Dixon returning a remarkable 5 for 20 off 18 overs, and Ian Sharrock with 3 for 10 off 8 overs. The batsmen made short work of it losing just one wicket in the process with the Owen brothers (Matt 31* and Dan 17*) seeing the boys home and grabbing 25 crucial points to keep their promotion hope alive. At the time of writing, not all the results from the other teams are in so we are unable to publicise an up to date league table, but the final two matche sof the season see the 2nd XI facing Bowdon at home and then Middlewich away.

Also at Townfield Lane, the 3rd XI started off in great style having their hosts five wickets down very early on and looking in a commanding position. That was until former Worcestershire & Kent cricketer; Barbadian Hartley Alleyne strode into bat to caress the ball to all parts of the ground and along with fellow batsmen Price set a commanding 214 total. Star man with the ball was Vijay who grabbed 6 for 60, including the wicket of Alleyne. In response, the Upton batsmen battled resolutely in reaching 181 for 8 with Alex Woods knocking a sublime 44 and Pete Clark, who uncharacteristically failed to pick up any wickets scored a cultured 53.

Once again, the 4th XI had their 25 points secured by Thursday with Irby having conceded the match and sees them sitting in 4th place in the table now.
