Name:
Madeleine Ward

How long have you been a member of UCC
Approx. 34 years

Away from UCC, what does your life look like?
Retired from teaching in July 2021 . Enjoying doing up and making my little workers cottage a home. Making a cosy place where friends and family are welcome. I love camping in my campervan and go away on my own exploring Wales and Lakes. Camping holidays with family . Helping with 8 grandchildren and having fun days out with them .They keep you young esp when trampolining! Have developed a love for gardening and turning tyres into flower beds!! Retirement ..whats that !!

What is your role on the Governing Committee/Playing field
Junior Chairman and Safe Guarding officer.

What does your role involve
Developing junior section working with coaches and young people to make our Junior section the best on Wirral. I am there if any issues arise regarding safeguarding within the club.

How long have you been in this role
I previously was Junior Chairman for 6 years. Had a break and taken up the challenge this year.

As a member of the committee, what are your ambitions for 2022
To continue to develop the junior section in terms of progression into senior section. Looking at ways into developing clear pathways, working with Cricket Chairman, coaches and parents. Adding coaches and support to our already fantastic coaching team.
To continue to develop girls cricket and their pathways into senior cricket.

Do you have a memorable moment you could share since being a member of UCC
I was asked to fill in for 5th team as player was delayed. I donned the kit hair tied back and took to field for 40 memorable minutes!! I was hidden in the field however ball came hurtling towards me yikes I had to stop!! So I stomped in it with cricket shoes!! Stopped a 4 but bowler Dave Lloyd wasn’t best pleased. Player turned up I walked off taking cap off the opposition didn’t realise I was Captains wife!! What did I do walked straight into bar to talk about my match?!!!

2nd time was when I was asked to present trophy to best girl player award at their presentation only to find out that the trophy was in my name Madeleine Ward Award. What an honour and one I will treasure! I have always wanted and championed girls cricket and now 20+ years later its becoming a reality!

What are your ambitions for yourself
To undertake the role of Junior Chairman to the highest possible standard. To leave it eventually in a good place. To watch my grandchildren play for UCC. To continue watching and supporting UCC to a good old age !!

Do you play or have you played any other sport/s and if so at what level
I never really played sports wasn’t picked for hockey team much to my disappointment. Swimming was my sport and joined swimming club many moons ago as a youngster! Think if born now would be cricketer , and outdoor sports would be my passion.

What’s your most memorable moment from playing that other sport/s
Outdoor sport when I did coasterring and was able to jump into sea from a great height!!
What are your other interests Love anything outdoors . Will have a go at anything rollercoasting through a forest, longest fastest zipwire in world, gorge walking, abseiling. Took children for 17 years to outdoor centre and hopefully gave them lasting memories.
Now can travel as I have and intend to go off in van more see our wonderful country. Latest was amazing trip to Outer Hebrides.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself that members may not knoW
Eldest of 8 girls and 2 boys. Born in Edinburgh and proud Scot! My cousin who’s a year older than me played football for Dundee United and Scotland Paul Hegarty. I would often be taken to matches by his Dad when I went back to Edinburgh. Abseiled down Leasowe Lighthouse.

Did you have a childhood hero and if so who
My Dad and Mum .They raised us all to be strong people. They showed compassion and care for others even with us 10! I would find people at our table who needed clothes or help, once a Polish refugee had tea with us and ended up with 1 of my Dads suits-he didn’t have many!!My Mum would fill garage with clothes and furniture ready to pass on to those who needed. My dad would travel anywhere to help us out.

Who is your favourite cricketer
Ian Botham. I went to first test match and thought I would be bored sitting all day!! I was mesmerised! He scored a 100 that day.

If you have visted a test ground what’s your favourite and why
Old Trafford- took my son age 6 months to his first test match.

Thanks Madeleine. On chatting with Madeleine she told me that there was something she could of put on the section 'Tell us something that we may not know about you' but thought it tooooo embarrassing. I know what it is but I shan't tell. Your secret's safe with me Mad.
