Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

It was on this day in 1981 that New York Mayor Ed Koch was given the Heimlich manoeuvre in a Chinese restaurant. We certainly hope there will be no similar dramas when Wirral Mayor, Councillor Tony Smith, visits the club this evening, however, rest assured we will have the debifrillator charged and ready. If anybody has a Premonition, please let us know!

This is also the day on which Mick Jagger celebrates his 76th birthday & Sandra Bullock her 55th so if you're looking for some Satisfaction, Speed down to the UCG for some cricketing action. If the forecast is to be believed it won't just be on the pitch that you'll feel The Heat so Say You Will!

It is difficult not to Paint It Black when considering the current situation for the 1st XI as they travel to 6th placed Davenham desperately in need of points to move off the bottom of the table. Davenham have not drawn a game this season, winning 6 and losing 5 of the 11 games completed so they will certainly offer an open game. Upton will be hoping they can repeat the bowling performance against the same opposition earlier in the season when a 5fer from Demolition Man, Liam Sundve helped bowl them out for 118. We will, however, hope to score more than the 105 all out in reply of which Tom Marsland contributed 44. The danger men for the hosts are likely to be Matthew Nicholls & Daniel Hancock who have 242 runs & 19 wickets respectively this season, however, Hope Floats and we certainly won't Throwaway all the hard work of recent seasons.

The 2nd XI welcome Alderley Edge to the UCG and will hope to repeat the win earlier in the season when we bowled Edge out for 121 (Tommy Maguire 5-37) and knocked them off for the loss of 4 wickets (Tom Woods 56*). Obviously You Can't Always Get What You Want, however, we will be Dancing In The Street if we can pick up the points and with the Infamous Upton Forces Of Nature nothing is impossible. The visitors have improved significantly since the first meeting and currently lie 8th in the table on 154 points having picked up 4 wins. Jonny Scurrah has lead the way with the bat scoring 331 runs whilst Lancashire Thunder's Emma Lamb has provided the main threat with the ball taking 13 wickets.

Old Habits Die Hard and the 3rd XI will look to bounce back from last week's Crash when they travel to Woodford who lie 11th in the table with only 1 win to their name. We won the first fixture scoring 185-3 (Gav Byrom 64) and bowling Woodford out for 116 (Sawda with 5-27), however, they are not to be taken lightly and they posses a real threat in Richard Oldroyd who has 343 runs to his name this season. We will be looking to the club's leading wicket taker, Ian Sharrock, to weave his Practical Magic to keep him in check. Similarly, whilst Anay Shah & Andrew Floyd have both picked up 7 wickets, we'll be hoping it's a Lucky Day for our batsmen. The 3rds lost top spot in the league last week but are only 2 points behind and will be looking to move up on The Blind Side.

The 4th XI have a couple of tough weeks in store when they have back to back fixtures against table topping Christleton but we certainly won't Hide Away and there'll be plenty of Joy if we can get some Lucky Chances and pick up the points. Our visitors this week have already picked up 10 wins this season (remember that this league plays under a Brand New Set Of Rules whereby there are no draws), Harry Morris contributing 243 runs whilst Adam Bayley & Jack Harding have both taken 13 wickets. The 4th XI have held their own this season, picking up 4 wins that sees then lie 7th in the table. They have certainly been helped lately by the incredible form of top Gun, Phil Wood who in his last 3 games has scored 247 runs (at an average of 123.5) and taken 6-19 (including a hat trick) from 13 overs.

On Sunday, the Ladies have a break from league action when they travel to Woodley in the Semi Final of the Cheshire Women's Cricket League - Knockout Plate, where Hard Woman Cath Williams (Paul tells me She's The Boss) will Turn The Girl Loose. Alex Wilson (99 runs) and Georgie Morton (12 wickets) are the ladies to watch out for in our hosts and our ladies will be out for revenge having lost the league fixture at Woodley last season despite 32 for Charlie Scudder and Ellen McGowan picking up 4-16. With a cup final and Visions of Paradise to aim for, it promises to be an exciting encounter.

Finally on Sunday, Phil Wood's Sunday 1st XI will be hoping to continue their fine season when their usual mix of experience and Minions travel to Burton.
