“Don’t worry about failures, worry about the chances you miss when you don’t even try.” – Jack Canfield

It was on this day in 1963 that American singer, song writer Jerry Lee Lewis quit Sun Records. Well there are no quitters at Upton and so as we go into the penultimate weekend of the season, all players will be giving it everything they've got. It's Funny How Time Slips Away, however, with Autumn Leaves just around the corner, it's time to Go Go Go.

Tom Marsland's 1st XI travel Down The Road A Piece to Brooklands knowing that only back to back wins will be enough to secure their Division 1 status. It won't be easy and will require plenty of Personality, however, we can take some hope from the 10 wicket win earlier in the season. Liam Sundve (bowling Great Balls Of Fire) took 4 of his 33 league wickets in that game and an undefeated 50 from Ross Dixon on his farewell appearance saw us home with plenty to spare. Alex Hart is their leading run scorer (267 runs) and their leading wicket taker (21 wickets) so we'll need to keep him quiet, however, Brooklands have scored less than 100 on 6 occasions this season so there is still hope, it is certainly not the End Of The Road.

After back to back wins in recent games, Tommy Maguire's 2nd XI will be in confidant mood and keen to hear You Win Again when they welcome 4th placed Nantwich to the Green, Green Grass of Home. Last week's victory moved us out of the bottom 2, however, there is still more work required so they'll Keep a Knockin'. Upton lost the first encounter despite 56 from leading run scorer Sam Talbot. Jake Pearson, who got 69* to see Nantwich home in the first game, is their leading run scorer with 285 league runs. On the bowling front, we will need to guard against the double spin threat of Chesters and Mogg who have 60 wickets between them but Baby (You've Got What It Takes).

Ian Sharrock's 3rd XI are still chasing the league title and hope to be Drinking Champagne and partying All Night Long come the end of the season. Whilst focussing on their trip to Mobberley they'll also be interested to see how leaders Didsbury get on against 4th placed Port Sunlight. In the reverse fixture earlier in the season, we dismissed Mobberley for 74 (James Woods taking 5-15) but needed all of our batting line up in reply, getting home by 1 wicket. We'll all be Breathless and there'll be a Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On if this game follows a similar pattern. That is the only game this season where Ian Sharrock has been left wicketless and he'll be hoping to pick up the 2 he needs to reach 50 for the season. For our hosts, Hassan Sayed has scored 415 runs and taken 23 wickets whilst Andrew Manning also has 23 wickets, including 4 in the first meeting.

Big Boss Man Ian Bruce's 4th XI welcome Wirral 2nds to the UCG hoping to Turn Around a defeat in the first fixture when we were all out for 93 chasing 186-6. Phil Wood missed out in that game, however, we hope he'll be In The Mood and looking to score the 69 runs he needs to take him to 500 runs for the season. The 4ths will comprise the usual mix of Young Blood and 39 And Holding. Rolin Johnson is their danger man with the bat having scored 319 league runs this season, including 2 50s in addition to a top score of 110*. On the bowling front, Laurie Stacey & Connor Gambles (who took 7 wickets between them in the first game) both have 15 league wickets.

Finally, on Sunday, Cath Williams and her Travelin' Band go to 3rd placed Ashton on Mersey. The ladies currently lie 2nd and will be Carrying On trying to win the league but will need to take maximum points from the final 2 games to have any chance. Sophie Morris is the leading wicket taker with 11 and she'll be looking to build on last week's excellent 6fer whilst Charlie Scudder will be keen to add to her 185 league runs. Claire Anderton is the leading batter for our hosts (226 runs) whilst Sarah Sutcliffe & Jordi Matthews have both picked up 21 wickets. Upton won the first encounter back in June by 61 runs so Don't Let Go of your hopes just yet! If it doesn't happen, it won't be a Cryin' Time, we'll just Move On Down The Line and come back stronger next year!
