New 1st XI Captain

Tom Back at the Helm...

We’re delighted to announce that Tom Marsland will be returning as Upton CC’s 1st XI captain for the 2026 season. A familiar face and a true club man, Tom previously led the side between 2016 and 2021, and we’re thrilled to see him back at the helm.

Before looking ahead, though, it’s only right that we say a huge thank you to Matt Owen, who has served as 1st XI captain for the past four seasons. Matt has given everything to the role – leading by example on the field, supporting the lads off it, and helping to steer the team through some memorable campaigns. His commitment and dedication have been outstanding, and the whole club is grateful for the energy and passion he brought to the captaincy.

Tom’s Upton record speaks for itself. He’s played over 300 1st XI games for the club and has been a key figure both on and off the pitch for well over a decade. Alongside his time at Upton, he also brings valuable Premier League experience from spells with other clubs earlier in his career. Behind the stumps, he’s made a name for himself across the county game – sitting 3rd on the all-time list for wicketkeeper catches in the Cheshire County Cricket League, and holding the record outright for the most stumpings in league history. Quite some achievement!

Speaking about his return to the captaincy, Tom said:

“It’s a real honour to be asked to lead the 1st XI again. Upton has always been my club and I’m excited about the squad we’re building for 2026. With some fresh faces coming in and the lads who’ve been around for a while, I think we’ve got a great balance and I can’t wait to get started.”

With his experience, leadership and deep connection to the club, Tom is the perfect man to guide the side into this next chapter. We know he’ll bring his trademark energy, commitment and competitive spirit to the role once again.

We’re excited to see Tom leading the lads out in 2026 – but that’s not the only news. Keep your eyes peeled for our next announcement, where we’ll be revealing more about the wider senior leadership team that will be supporting him this season.
