NEW SIGNING - Alex Townend

Wiggy joins from CBH

The squad-building for 2026 shows no signs of slowing down, and we’re delighted to confirm that Alex Townend, better known as “Wiggy”, will be joining Upton CC from Chester Boughton Hall ahead of the new season.

Alex made his senior debut for Chester Boughton Hall in 2012 and has since gone on to become a key part of their setup over the past decade. A genuine opening bowler, he’s taken nearly 350 wickets, with best figures of an impressive 7 for 33, and he’s also proved himself a handy lower-order bat, scoring over 2,500 runs at an average of 20. Add in his reputation as a very athletic fielder, and it’s clear Wiggy brings both quality and balance to the side.

More importantly, he’s also known as a great guy and fantastic teammate, and we’re confident he’ll fit perfectly into the Upton setup both on and off the field.

1st XI Captain Tom Marsland said:
“Wiggy’s a massive signing for us, in fact I tried to sign him every year I was captain previously! He’s got bags of experience at a top club, and his ability with both ball and bat gives us real depth. He’s a competitor, a great lad, and exactly the kind of person you want around a cricket club. We’re all really looking forward to having him here.”

Alex added:
“Really excited to be joining Upton CC ahead of the new season! After a fair few good chats with Tom, it’s clear there’s a real buzz around the club and big things happening both on and off the pitch. Can’t wait to get started and hopefully help the team push for success this year!”

We can’t wait to welcome Alex and his family to Upton and look forward to seeing him steaming in and making an impact in 2026. With a strong squad now taking shape, there’s plenty to look forward to as the new season approaches.
