As we look ahead to the 2026 season, we’ll be without a few very familiar faces in the 1st XI. Three lads who’ve given a huge amount to Upton over the years are taking a break from playing, and while we’ll miss seeing them out in the middle, family, work, and a bit of breathing space quite rightly come first.
Matt Owen has been a massive part of the senior setup for well over a decade. Since making his 1st XI debut back in 2011 against Mobberley, he’s played more than 200 games and scored over 4,200 runs. For the past four years he’s also led the side as captain, giving his all week in, week out and prior to that served the Club as Junior Chair. Matt’s stepping back to spend more time with his young family, and we can’t thank him enough for everything he’s done for the team and the club.
Matt Smith first played for the 1st XI in 2010 against Poynton and has gone on to rack up over 250 games and more than 4,200 runs. Alongside that, together with his wider family, he’s been an integral part of the club both on & off the pitch. . With a young family of his own and big commitments in his professional life as a GP partner, Smudge is taking a well-earned breather from cricket. His presence in the middle the order will be sorely missed.
Chris McArthur has been a fans favourite at Upton ever since he arrived as an overseas player in 2017 with his flowing locks and chiselled beard. After further spells with us in 2018, 2024 and 2025, he’s now played over 100 games in Upton colours, scoring close to 5,000 runs and chipping in with nearly 100 wickets. After several years of back-to-back cricket, Chris is taking time to recharge, but we all hope to see him back with us again before too long.
To MO, Smudge, & Macca – thank you for everything you’ve given to Upton CC. You’ve left a big mark on the club and the door is always open whenever you’re ready to return. More importantly, you’ll always be part of the Upton family, and we look forward to seeing you around the place next summer – even if not out in the middle!
And while we say farewell (for now) to some familiar faces, keep your eyes peeled next week for an exciting announcement about a new signing and an updated senior cricket leadership team for 2026…
