1st XI vs ROMILEY (H)
Date/Time: Sat 7 June | 12pm
Preview: A busy weekend ahead for Matt Owen’s side with a Cheshire Cup match on Sunday, but first he will be looking for a response against Romiley on Saturday after last week’s 6-wicket defeat to Bollington. This should be an evenly matched contest as both teams are currently on the same number of points. There are three changes this week, with Matt Smith and Joe Williams returning to the side and Graeme Keenan coming up from the 2s. Hopefully current league leading wicket taker Phil McGowan can continue his great start to the season against a Romiley team that beat Stockport by 5 wickets last time out.
League Position: Upton – 4th (92 pts) | Romiley – 5th (92 pts)
Leading Run Scorers: Upton – Chris McArthur (350) | Romiley – Isaac Willett (344)
Leading Wicket Takers: Upton – Phil McGowan (15) | Romiley – Alex Hooton & James Badrock (11)
Previous Meeting: 23 July 2022: Upton lost by 6 wickets after being all out for 127 inside 44 overs (Dan Owen 52) before Romiley reached the target in 34 overs (David Williams 3-30; Phil McGowan 3-44).
2nd XI vs Bowdon (A)
Date/Time: Sat 7 June | 12pm
Preview: The 2s have made a great start following promotion and are currently second in the standings after last week’s comprehensive 7-wicket victory over Marple. However, they’re likely to face a tougher test this week against a Bowdon side coming off the back of an impressive performance of their own – bowling current tabletoppers Lindow out for 97 in a 4-wicket victory. Rich Battersby makes two changes this week, with the experienced pair of Dave Stewart and Tom Woods returning to the fold. Upton will need to watch out for Haydn George, who has two five-wicket hauls to his name already this year.
League Position: Upton – 2nd (112 pts) | Bowdon – 5th (92 pts)
Leading Run Scorers: Upton – Ian Potter (141) | Bowdon – Colin Parrott (128)
Leading Wicket Takers: Upton – Rich Battersby & Graeme Keenan (13) | Bowdon – Haydn George (16)
Previous Meeting: 25 August 2018: Upton lost a close game by 1 wicket. Bowdon reached the 130 target in the 39th over (Tommy Maguire 3-30; Graeme Keenan 3-40) after they bowled Upton out for 129 (Darren Warburton 30).
3rd XI vs ASHTON-ON-MERSEY 2ND XI (H)
Date/Time: Sat 7 June | 12pm
Preview: 3s skipper Luke Williams will be looking for some ‘bouncebackability’ from his team after last week’s tough 98-run loss against Port Sunlight 2s. The 3s will be buoyed by some returning faces against Ashton-on-Mersey 2s this week, as Jonathan Cockrell, Nathan Jones, Matt Morris, and George Williams all come into the side. There is also an Upton club debut for Sam Williams. Ashton-on-Mersey beat Oakmere by 122 runs last time out and, with only one point and two places in the table separating the sides, they’ll be hoping Ryan Carey, their leading run scorer and wicket taker, can continue his good form.
League Position: Upton – 9th (73 pts) | Ashton-on-Mersey – 7th (74 pts)
Leading Run Scorers: Upton – Faiz Ahmed (97) | Ashton-on-Mersey – Ryan Carey (187)
Leading Wicket Takers: Upton – Ian Sharrock (12) | Ashton-on-Mersey – Ryan Carey (9)
Previous Meeting: 4 September 2021: Upton were dismissed with the score on a Nelson – hitting 111 in 38.5 overs (Gavin Byrom 55). Ashton-on-Mersey reached 115-7 in the 37th over (Ian Sharrock 3-29; Sophie Morris 3-32) for a 3-wicket victory.
4th XI vs Cholmondeley 1st XI (A)
Date/Time: Sat 7 June | 1pm
Preview: It’s been a difficult start to the season for the 4s after last year’s promotion and it’s not set to get any easier this Saturday against Cholmondeley 1s. Naturally, playing any 1st XI at this level will be a challenge but Cholmondeley are also in good form – sitting third in the table after beating Maritime 3s by 6 wickets last week. The 4s will be looking for only their second victory of the season after losing to Knutsford 2s by 57 runs in their last match. Skipper Phil Wood makes a single change to the side for this weekend with Jack Presswell returning to the line-up.
League Position: Upton – 11th (38 pts) | Cholmondeley – 3rd (97 pts)
Leading Run Scorers: Upton – Phil Wood (239) | Cholmondeley – Alex Chandy (199)
Leading Wicket Takers: Upton – Alexa Harrison (11) | Cholmondeley – Bismillah Khan (17)
Previous Meeting: N/A
1st XI vs HYDE (H)
Date/Time: Sun 8 June | 1pm
Preview: After their league game against Romiley on Saturday, the 1s will be back at the UCG a day later for a Cheshire Cup 2nd Round match against Hyde. Cup Captain Matt Smith will be hoping his team can pull off a ‘cupset’ but it will be difficult against a Hyde side who have made a solid start to the season in the Cheshire County Premier League – most recently beating Alderley Edge by 4 wickets.
Previous Rounds: Upton – 1st Round: Tattenhall (Conceded) | Hyde – 1st Round: Bye
Previous Meeting: 11 August 2018: Hyde won a nailbiter by 1 wicket with four balls remaining, scoring 251/9 (Ross Dixon 6-66) after Upton had hit 250/8 (Chris McArthur 134). Notably, Lancashire’s George Balderson played in this game, scoring 63 runs and picking up two wickets along with a run out.
Sunday 1st XI vs LYMM OUGHTRINGTON PARK FRIENDLY XI (H)
Date/Time: Sun 8 June | 1.30pm
Preview: There’s plenty going on at the club this Sunday as, in addition to the 1s cup match, the Sunday 1s host Lymm Oughtrington Park Friendly XI on the back pitch. There are six changes from last week as Wood Sr. replaces Wood Jr. while Sean Lynch, Olivia Taylor and Alex Waring all come into the side. There are also senior debuts for U15 brothers Keelin and Padraig Williamson. The Sunday 1s will be hoping for a more competitive game this week after skittling Runcorn out for 70 last week and reaching the target inside 7 overs. As for this week’s opponents, this is their first outing of the year.
Previous Meeting: 9 June 2024: Upton won by 12 runs after posting 147/7 (Callum McCormick 43; Matt Morris 37) before restricting Lymm Oughtrington Park to 135/7 from their 35 overs (Connor Langton 2-10).
