This Sunday saw Upton Ladies’ first defeat of the season, as we travelled up the M56 to Woodford Cricket Club, to face a strong Didsbury team.
Ellen won the toss and elected to bat first, seeing Lily and Praba take to the crease. The first 11 overs saw a flurry of wickets for Didsbury leaving Upton 27-3.
Didsbury kept it tight in the field with their consistent bowling, which enhanced by the unpredictability of the pitch saw Upton confined to a low run rate. Alexa and Ellie took to the crease scoring a crucial 34 run partnership for Upton, which also saw Alexa herself score 28 runs. After this we again saw a flurry of wickets leaving us with a score of 80 to defend.
We set out to the field ready to defend after a team talk with Andy and Graeme. With an excellent opening spell from Charlie, bowling 2 maidens and having 4 overs only go for 4 runs, as well as an early wicket from Hannah, we were set to continue our defence. However, after a few overs Didsbury’s batters began to settle at the crease and began to find the gaps in the field, allowing their run rate to accelerate despite Upton’s best fielding efforts.
This saw Ellen call on Jess and Liv to join the bowling attack. Seeing both take crucial wickets for the team. With Jess gaining a wicket in the 16th over taking the bails off and Liv in the 21st over, with a catch from Lily.
Hannah returned for a final spell, seeing another maiden over from her, but unfortunately it was too late for Upton with Didsbury scoring the winning runs in the 24th over.
We go again on the 29th June against Northop Hall, at home, looking to push forward and get another win on the board.
